The San Mateo County Historical Association, located on a community college campus, was offered the opportunity to acquire the landmark Redwood City County Courthouse. The move inspired a rethinking of the museum mission. The story of San Mateo County is the classic story of the American suburbs. Five immersive exhibitions were arranged to reveal the history of the county.
These thematic sketches storyboard the experience, and establish the criteria for architectural renovations and exhibit design development.
This museum at the heart of Redwood City is at the vanguard of the next chapter in the history of the suburbs, as Main Street, not the mall, reemerges as the most meaningful and focal place in suburbia.
